Best overall

Whisker

Litter-Robot 4

Model: Litter-Robot 4

The most proven self-cleaning litter box you can buy. It sifts clumps into a sealed drawer that Whisker says may need emptying as rarely as every 8 days, uses laser and weight sensors to detect your cat, and logs each cat's weight in the app. It serves up to 4 cats weighing 3 to 25 lbs, comes with a 1-year warranty, and does not need a subscription. Cats.com ranks it among the most reliable models they have tested, and BGR, reviewing its newer sibling, suggested the 4 may be the more reliable choice. The catches: it wants clumping clay litter, not plant-based or tofu, and big cats can find the interior cramped.

Best value

PETKIT

PuraMax 2

Model: PuraMax 2

The least expensive pick here and Cats.com's best performer for odor control, thanks to a sealed drawer and a leakproof liner. It has 7 infrared and 4 weight sensors, an entrance that stays open so a cat cannot be trapped, a large 76-liter interior, and a 7-liter waste bin PETKIT rates for up to 15 days. It works with any clumping litter. It is rated for cats from 3 to 22 lbs and not for kittens under 6 months, PETKIT says to keep it off carpets and mats because they interfere with the sensors, and Cats.com found deep cleaning tedious.

Best for health tracking

Petlibro

Luma

Model: Luma Smart Litter Box

The pick for owners who want to watch their cat's health. Luma's camera tells urine from stool, tracks frequency and consistency, and recognizes up to 10 cats, so a multi-cat home gets per-cat records. It has a large 17.4-inch entrance, works with clumping, tofu and mixed litters, holds about a week of waste for two cats, and carries a 24-month warranty and a 90-day in-home trial. The AI analysis is the catch: Petlibro requires a paid Video Cloud AI subscription for it, from $95.99 a year as of November 2026. It is rated for adult cats from 2.2 to 22 lbs, and some owners have reported leaking around the litter compartment.

Easiest switch, works with any litter

PetSafe

ScoopFree SmartSpin

Model: ScoopFree SmartSpin

PetSafe says it works with clumping or non-clumping litter, the most flexible litter support here, which makes it the easiest switch for a cat that is picky about what it walks on. It spins to sift clumps into a sealed waste drawer, PetSafe rates it for up to two weeks hands-free, and its app tracks weight and visits. It takes cats up to 25 lbs. Cats.com found it quiet and easy to clean, but it arrives unassembled, and its entrance sits 12 inches off the floor, which can be a climb for kittens, seniors and very large cats.

The short answer

Buy the Litter-Robot 4 if you want the one most likely to just keep working. Buy the PETKIT PuraMax 2 if you want most of that for less money and odor control is your top priority. Buy the Petlibro Luma if you want to track each cat’s health and accept a subscription for it. And buy the PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin if your cat refuses clumping litter, because PetSafe says it works with clumping or non-clumping litter.

What actually matters

Self-cleaning litter boxes all promise the same thing, so the differences that decide whether you will be happy are practical.

Reliability. A litter box that jams or throws false errors is worse than a regular one, because you stop checking it. This is the main reason the Litter-Robot 4 stays at the top: it has years of firmware fixes behind it. Newer, feature-heavy models, including the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, have had rougher starts.

Your cat’s size and age. Every model has a weight range, and small kittens should not use automatic cleaning. Large cats can find enclosed globes cramped. Check the range before you buy, not after.

Litter. Most of these need clumping litter. If your cat is attached to something else, that narrows the field fast.

Floors. PETKIT warns against placing the PuraMax 2 on carpet or mats because they interfere with its weight sensors. Plan for a hard floor.

Subscriptions. None of these needs a subscription to clean, but some put their best features behind one. Petlibro’s AI waste analysis is the clearest example.

Where the Litter-Robot 5 fits

Whisker launched the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro in late 2025. The 5 Pro adds dual cameras with night vision and facial recognition for up to five cats, plus a redesigned drawer and a color display. Reviews are split on whether it is ready: BGR’s February 2026 review ran into repeated app crashes, motor errors and false alerts, while Cats.com’s November 2026 update ranks it first. The 5 Pro is not sold on Amazon. If the camera and cat ID matter to you, it is worth a look direct from Whisker; if you want the safe choice, the Litter-Robot 4 still is.

Getting a cat to use one

Most cats need a transition. Set the new box up next to the old one with automatic cleaning switched off or delayed, use the same litter your cat already accepts, and remove the old box only once your cat is using the new one consistently. The Litter-Robot 4, for one, lets you delay the cleaning cycle by up to 30 minutes after your cat leaves, which helps nervous cats.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best self-cleaning litter box in 2026?
For most homes, the Litter-Robot 4. It has the longest track record, a sealed drawer that can go about a week between emptyings, support for up to 4 cats, and no required subscription. If price matters more, the PETKIT PuraMax 2 is the strongest value and performed best on odor in Cats.com's testing. If you want health monitoring, the Petlibro Luma's camera tracks each cat's waste, though that feature needs a paid subscription.
Is the Litter-Robot 5 better than the Litter-Robot 4?
It has more features: Whisker launched the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro in late 2025 with a redesigned drawer, a color display, and on the Pro, dual cameras with cat facial recognition. Early reviews split. BGR's February 2026 review of the 5 Pro hit repeated app crashes, motor errors and false alerts, and suggested the 4 may be more reliable, while Cats.com's November 2026 update ranks the 5 Pro first. If you want the newest features and can tolerate early bugs, the 5 Pro is the one to watch; if you want the safest bet, the 4 is still it.
Are self-cleaning litter boxes safe for kittens?
Not in automatic mode for small kittens. Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4's automatic mode is for cats of at least 3 lbs, with smaller kittens using semi-automatic mode. PETKIT says the PuraMax 2 is not for pets under 6 months, and Petlibro says the same for Luma, recommending manual cleaning instead. The Litter-Robot 4, PuraMax 2 and Luma all use sensors to detect a cat inside, but the safest approach is to wait until a kitten meets the stated minimum.
What litter works in a self-cleaning litter box?
Most need clumping litter, because the machine sifts out clumps. The Litter-Robot 4 works best with clumping clay; Whisker says silica crystals can work if they pass through its screen, but it does not recommend plant-based, wood pellet or other non-clumping litter. The PETKIT PuraMax 2 takes any clumping litter. Petlibro's Luma accepts clumping, tofu and mixed litters. The PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin is the most flexible: PetSafe says it accepts clumping or non-clumping litter, though PetSafe recommends a premium clumping litter for the best results.
Do self-cleaning litter boxes need a subscription?
Only for extra features. None of these picks needs a subscription to clean. The Litter-Robot 4's Whisker+ plan is optional and adds longer history and trend reports. Petlibro's Luma is the one where the headline feature, AI waste analysis, is locked behind a paid Video Cloud AI plan. Check what is subscription-only before you buy, because it varies a lot between brands.
How often do you empty a self-cleaning litter box?
Roughly once a week for one or two cats, depending on the model and how many cats use it. Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4's drawer can go as long as 8 days, PETKIT rates the PuraMax 2 for up to 15 days, Petlibro says Luma holds about 7 days of waste for two cats, and PetSafe rates the SmartSpin for up to two weeks. Those are best-case figures; more cats or bigger cats mean more frequent emptying.
